Tian Yan- The Heavenly Eye
In the beginning of the universe, the indistinguishable chaos was split all of a sudden as heaven and earth began to separate. Everything was formless, boundless and without order. Meanwhile, the god, Pangu, was being conceived within. One day, Pangu awoke and stood up, causing the separation of heaven and earth. Over countless years, Pangu transformed into the sun, moon, stars, mountains, rivers, lakes, seas, birds, beasts, fish, and insects, marking the birth of all things in the universe.
The Goddess Nüwa created human beings, and they added a touch of vitality and wonder to this brand-new world. Men and women married, leading to human reproduction and the formation of tribal alliances.Human civilization thus began to arise.
On the shores of the East Sea, in a land of abundance - Lao Mountain, a powerful tribe - the Dong Yi Tribe, rose to prominence. According to legend, when their leader, Shaohao, was born, colorful phoenixes circled in the sky, and when he ascended the throne, the phoenixes returned. Therefore, the Dong Yi Tribe established the phoenix as their tribal deity, viewing it as their totem. This is the origin of the Chinese phoenix culture.
According to the Classic of Mountains and Seas, there was a Fusang tree where ten suns nested.
The divine tree, towering far into the clouds, served as the celestial ladder bridging the three realms. The Tang Valley, where the tree stood, was the territory of the Dong Yi Tribe. In the eyes of the ancients, the phoenix and its totem, along with the golden crow, were all closely linked to the sun. Emperor Shaohao was benevolent and kind, and appointed birds as officials. Thus, the tribe flourished a’mid the harmonious coexistence of humans and gods, and all living beings reveled in the grace of mutual communication.
As the time flew, the Dong Yi Tribe formed an alliance with the Yellow Emperor. Together they defeated Chiyou and Emperor Yan. Thus, Chinese culture was established. The totems of dragon and phoenix were combined and passed down for thousands of years.
During the decline of the tribe, rituals were in disarray, and the mingling of mortals and deities caused great chaos. Zhuanxu, the nephew of Shaohao, implemented the policy of "cutting off the earth and heaven". He ordered Zhong and Li to sever the divine tree connecting heaven and earth, thus separating the two realms and ending the communication between humans and gods. At the same time, order was restored in both the celestial realm and the mortal world.
Although the sacred tree was cut down, a strong power remained at the point of fracture, hidden from the sight of mortals, through which only immortals could descend. It is said that on the first and fifteenth nights of the lunar month, the immortals descended on earth through this point, the Heavenly Eye, recording the merits and demerits, punishing the evil, bestowing blessings and lon’gevity upon the good.
Time marches on. In the early years of the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong, to stabilize the nation, tasked the Taoist Li Chunfeng and the astrologer Yuan Tiangang with finding the four pillars of peace for the world: the Emperor, Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. The two searched all over the country, and finally found the four pillars. They placed Emperor's and Confucian’s pillars within the Imperial Palace, the Buddhist pillar at Mount Wutai and the Taoist pillar at Mount Lao. As Li Chunfeng and Yuan Tiangang reached Mount Lao, they were drawn by the pri’mordial energy of heaven and earth.
Li Chunfeng said, "This is Cuo Piling". According to the trigram "Pi" in the " Yi Jing ", " Tuan Zhuan "and" Xiang Zhuan ", this is precisely the place where heaven and earth do not intersect but separate. Yuan Tiangang replied, " According to Zuo Zhuan, it is the place where the heaven and earth meet, so that mortals and immortals can communicate with each other." That is, ''Tian Yan" , the Heavenly Eye.
Emperor Taizong, upon hearing the news, was in exultation. He specially ordered the construction of a temple at this location, and bestowed upon it the name "Huangde An" , which means Temple of Imperial Virtue. It is the predecessor of the Guanyin Temple.
Chinese civilization has a long and rich history, with countless dynasties rising and falling. Yet, "Tian Yan" has remained unchanged for millennia, blessing the whole world.
With peace and tranquility in every corner, this blessed land shall ultimately radiate with brilliance and glory.
